A call to Saraswati
This blog is to let you know how the project in Kerala is going and the amazing
experiences the volunteers have gone through.
We started the new year at Auxilium in the beginning of June. Since then the
volunteers have been designing and delivering the lessons at the school for both the
local boys and girls orphanages. The volunteers have been hard at work designing
learning aids, delivering lessons and classroom assisting for various age groups, and
this week we have started our second year at another English school, S.D.P.Y. So far
at S.D.P.Y we have begun one to one tuition's for struggling students and have taken
spoken English classes from standards 1 to 4. The kids are so cute, are fun to work
with and have a great attitude towards education. Starting at S.D.P.Y was a struggle,
at first we had to get rid of the wildlife that had made their home in our work place. Now
it is a comfortable working environment with lots of resources to help us with our work
and with the beautiful goddess of education Saraswati looking over us there are high spirits within the office.
However it is not all work and no play at GVI Kerala. Last weekend the volunteers went
snorkeling and kayaking in a breathtakingly beautiful quarry; the sun was shining, clean
waters and huge cliff faces surrounding us. It was truly a sight to be seen. One of the
volunteers caught a fish with his bare hands, and for the whole day we were drowning
with laughter.
During the project the volunteers have become like family with regular trips to local
eateries, shopping sprees in handicraft stores and general banter becoming all but run
of the mill. Working as a team throughout we’re all putting our shoulders to the wheel to
make GVI Kerala an even more exciting, joyous and all round FUN place to spend time.
