Our partners at the orphanage/ teaching project are really excited to have GVI on ground helping them starting this July 2010! The kids in the school are all on summer break right now and are going to be full of energy when they return...and when our volunteers start ! The children who attend the school are all from really low socio-economic backgrounds, orphan children or from single parent families. For a lot of them coming to school is almost a priviledge and considered lucky as it means they can study instead of going to work.
At the moment because there are a lot of students attending the school, class sizes are too big and some students are weak. GVI is thus stepping in and will be placing volunteers in assisting teachers in the classrooms, helping with one to one teaching for the weaker students, as well helping with school activities, computer training, spoken english, sports and so on. This is going to be a great experience especially when combined with all the fun side trips that volunteers can opt for such as the backwaters tour, trekking in Munnar, kayaking in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, visiting temples, or chilling out at one of the beach towns of Varkala or Kovalam. So join us in 'Gods Own Country'- quite literally!
